Linkedin – Survey your connections to improve recommendations

Connections without relationships equals little to no value. Linkedin knows that; so when they make recommendations like “who you should connect” with or “people also viewed” they want to provide trustworthy information that actually brings you value. If they don’t, users won’t trust their recommendations, engagement will go down, and so will company revenue.

Why is Linkedin taking surveys about your connections?

So…what’s the best way for Linkedin to know IRL (in real life) who’s actively bringing value to their network so they can identify a well performing user segment? Ask their connections!

What the survey looks like

Visit “My Network” and you may see a notification that says “Take a survey about your connections to improve recommendations.” It won’t be there for everyone since this is just a survey.

Reviewing your connections

Linkedin will show you a connection and ask if you’ve ever had a conversation with that person online or in real life. Your responses are confidential and will not be shared with your connections. You can answer Yes/No/Skip.

Finishing the survey

Upon completion Linkedin says Thanks and lets you see a nice blue ribbon (which means absolutely nothing). But hey, you helped create a better user experience! More on that below.

Who benefits from you taking the connection survey?

Linkedin, members, and maybe the connections you reviewed. Linkedin will use your feedback to improve their algorithms that make recommendations. That benefits everyone. It may also give credit to those actual connections you surveyed, but there’s no documentation from Linkedin about that. Here are two places the recommendations will likely apply:

  • People You May Know – Identifies existing members who you might know to help you grow your network. Usually appears in the LinkedIn feed of your homepage. Learn more about People You May Know.
  • People Also Viewed – This shows some of the profiles that viewers of your profile also looked at. People Also Viewed is usually on the right side of a member’s profile.
